The No Contest Entry

OK, so after reading the instructions carefully, I discovered that the contest is only open to College students, which I am not. The Apple Insomnia competition is to capture one photograph that communicates the message "Growth." Here is my entry. But I can't enter, plus, I am not in Death Valley where I took this image last year. So I am eliminated on two accounts. Oh well.

OK OK OK

I got a few emails from people hassling me about the photo below - all in good fun. Teasing, you know. Wow, is that all you can do. Sarcastic remarks like, "Whoa, you are really good." So I'm posting my favorite, well my favorite nice photo, just to ward off the nay sayers. Here it is Family Portrait Photography in Watch Hill, Rhode Island

The Season Begins

So it's Spring, and the photography Season is just beginning. I did my first family portrait of the season last weekend. In between, nice images of the family gathered in white and khaki, I grabbed this shot. I LOVE IT! It's one of those moments when people are all caught up in themselves,a nd the preparation for the photograph. Obviously, they won't select this image for their portraits, but i found it worth studying. Click the photo to enlarge if you want to study the expressions.

New Orleans & Gulfport

Sorry, there are no photos yet. The internet connection is not very good. I'm here in Gulfport, Mississippi with a group doing repair work as part of the Hurricane Katrina recovery. I never camee here in the days following Katrina, but it's amazing that 18 months later, this place is still a disaster. While the French Quarter and downtown New Orleans is better, and there will be a Jazz festival this weekend - the surrounding area of New Orleans is one smashed house after another, especially where I stayed in my hotel on the East New Orleans area.

Now we are in Gulfport, Mississippi - and the damage is just as bad, though the recovery seems to be moving along much quicker. Our group has been assigned a house to help rebuild, because the owners had either not paid their insurance premium or that's what the insurance company is claiming. SO with no money, he runs a Motorcycle repair garage out of his home, now a FEMA trailer, they had no choice but to hope for volunteers. A local organization that sprung up after the Hurricance is helping with supplies, and coordinating volunteers to help with the labor, Our group of 17 is just one of many many church and civic groups that have made trips to the area to help with rebuilding homes, such as this gentleman's.

If I have time, and a better conection, I'll try to post some photographs over the weekend. If not, then when I return on the 19th.

Off to Mississippi

I'm headed off to New orleans and Gulfport, Mississippi for a week with of relief work in helping to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. (The photos above, are not mine, but simply a reminder of the devastation) I've not been down since Katrina hit nearly 18 months ago, so I'll be interested to see what's happened. I'll be staying in Gulfport, and I'm told there is an internet connection, so you can follow the updates here. I leave Wednesday

Easter Brrrrr Sunrise on the beach

Our church held sunrise worship this morning. All you Florida types that have sunrise worship in 70 degree weather got nothin' on us New Englanders. It was 27 degrees this morning at 6:15, just before the sun peaked over the horizon. I was so cold I came home and had to soak my feet in the bath tub for 10 minutes.

Dad & The Boys

I found this photo in my archives from a few years ago, before my Dad passed away. My brothers and I with my Dad, Thanksgiving, 2004. I believe my mom took the photo.

NYC Birthday Trip

We headed down to New York for my Birthday. I wanted to see the one man play by lawrence Wright, My Road Trip to Al-Qaeda, which was amazing. It's playing at the Culture Project in Soho through April 15. Wright is the author of The Looming Tower, which chronicles the events and persons leading up to 9-11. The play is kind of a summary, and a follow-up to what's happened since 2001.

Our road trip to NYC was less eventful, but filled with the usual cars, trains & subways. Plus dinner at this wonderful Argentinian restaurant called 900. Plus we stopped at the giant Apple Store near Central park, which of course, just made me drool all over the computers and such.

New Postcard

After a couple years of the Black & White postcard from Newport Vineyards, I am replacing it with a new card from this past Fall. I love this image from the Glen Manor House in portsmouth, RI of the Manton's October Wedding.
